Immigrating to Canada

Canada runs the world's most transparent skilled-migration system. Most Indian applicants enter through Express Entry — a federal pool ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) — or a Provincial Nominee Program. Permanent Residency leads to Canadian citizenship after 3 of 5 years of physical presence.

Main visa routes

  • Express Entry — a single online pool for the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades (FST) programs; ITAs issued roughly every two weeks, including category-based draws for Healthcare, STEM, Trade, Transport, and French speakers.
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) — Ontario (OINP), BC (BC PNP), Alberta (AAIP), Saskatchewan (SINP), Manitoba (MPNP), Nova Scotia (NSNP) and others; a provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points and effectively guarantees an ITA.
  • Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) — employer-driven PR for the four Atlantic provinces; Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) and the new Francophone Community Immigration Pilot replace the previous Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot in 2025.
  • Start-up Visa — PR for entrepreneurs backed by a designated venture capital fund (CAD $200k), angel group (CAD $75k), or business incubator (no investment); Self-Employed Persons program is currently paused for new applications.
  • Work permits & family — LMIA-based and LMIA-exempt under the International Mobility Program (intra-company transferees, CUSMA professionals, Global Skills Strategy two-week processing); Family Sponsorship for spouses, partners, dependent children, and the PGP lottery for parents and grandparents.

Who can apply / Key requirements

  • Express Entry minimums — at least 67/100 on FSW selection grid, then ranked on CRS out of 1,200; recent general draw cut-offs 470–540, lower for category-based draws.
  • Language — IELTS General or CELPIP for English (CLB 7+ for FSW), TEF Canada or TCF for French; strong French (B2+) adds significant CRS points.
  • Credentials — Educational Credential Assessment from WES, IQAS, ICAS, CES, PEBC, or MCC for foreign degrees; provincial licensing for regulated occupations.
  • Proof of funds — required for FSW and FST (around CAD $14,690 for a single applicant, more for families); not required for CEC if working legally in Canada.

The main Canadian PR routes

Express Entry — FSW, CEC, FST

Federal Skilled Worker for overseas applicants with skilled experience, Canadian Experience Class for those already working in Canada, Federal Skilled Trades for tradespeople. CRS ranks the pool; ITAs issue roughly every two weeks, including category-based draws.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Each province runs streams aligned to local labour needs — OINP, BC PNP, AAIP, SINP, MPNP, NSNP and others. Many run Expression of Interest pools; an Enhanced nomination adds 600 CRS points and is effectively a guaranteed ITA.

AIP, RCIP & Francophone pilots

Atlantic Immigration Program is employer-driven PR for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland. From 2025, the Rural Community Immigration Pilot and the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot replace the older Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot.

Start-up Visa, Caregiver & Family

Start-up Visa grants PR to entrepreneurs backed by a designated VC, angel, or incubator. Caregiver pilots and Family Sponsorship cover spouses, common-law and conjugal partners, dependent children, and the PGP lottery for parents and grandparents.

Eligibility & CRS scoring

CRS scores you out of 1,200 across age, education, language, Canadian and foreign work experience, plus partner factors. Additional points come from a provincial nomination, a Canadian job offer, French at NCLC 7+, a Canadian sibling, or Canadian study credentials.

  • Core human capital — up to ~500 points (single) or 460 (with partner); peaks around age 20–29 with a master's degree and CLB 9+ English.
  • Skill transferability — up to 100 points for combinations of education + language and education + foreign experience.
  • Additional points — 600 for a PNP nomination, 200 for an LMIA-backed senior job offer (50 otherwise), 25–50 for French, 15 for a Canadian sibling.
  • Category-based draws — IRCC targets Healthcare, STEM, Trade, Transport, Agriculture, and French speakers; cut-offs are often well below general draws.

Process & timeline

  • Stage 1 — IELTS/TEF, ECA, and Express Entry profile creation; profile valid 12 months.
  • Stage 2 — Invitation to Apply (ITA) issued in a draw; 60 days to submit the full e-APR on the IRCC portal.
  • Stage 3 — IRCC standard 6-month processing for most PR e-APRs; biometrics CAD $85, right-of-PR fee CAD $575.
  • Landing & PR card — Confirmation of PR is issued; you complete landing in Canada and receive a 5-year PR card.
  • Citizenship — apply after 1,095 days of physical presence in any 5-year window, pass language and citizenship test.

FAQs

Common questions about Canada immigration

What CRS score do I really need?

Recent general Express Entry draws have cleared at 470–540, but category-based draws (Healthcare, STEM, French, Trade, Transport) often go significantly lower. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS and is the most reliable way to lift a borderline profile.

Do I need a job offer for PR?

No — Express Entry and most PNPs select on points, not on a job offer. Job offers add CRS points and unlock some PNP streams, but FSW, CEC, and many enhanced PNPs can be won without one.

How important is French?

Very. NCLC 7+ French unlocks dedicated category-based draws with lower cut-offs and adds up to 50 CRS points, often the difference between sitting in the pool and receiving an ITA.

When can I apply for Canadian citizenship?

After 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada within the last 5 years as a permanent resident, plus filing the required tax returns and passing the citizenship test and language assessment.
