FAQs

Common questions about studying in Australia

What is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement?

From March 2024, the GS test replaced the older Genuine Temporary Entrant rule. Applicants must answer targeted questions showing genuine study intent, course fit, and ties beyond a migration motive.

How long is the post-study work visa?

The Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa runs 2 years for Bachelor's and Master's by coursework. Select graduates of regional campuses can access extensions of up to 6 years total in some streams.

How do I move from study to PR?

Through skilled migration: Subclass 189 (independent), 190 (state nominated), or 491 (regional). Many graduate courses align to occupations on the Skilled Occupation List, which feeds the points-tested system.

How many hours can I work during study?

48 hours per fortnight during term (the cap reinstated in 2023) and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. Students working in aged-care sectors had temporary exceptions through 2024.
