About the TOEFL

The TOEFL iBT is developed and delivered by ETS (Educational Testing Service). It measures how well you read, listen, speak, and write English in an academic environment. The current iBT format runs under 2 hours and is the version accepted by virtually all universities worldwide that ask for TOEFL — particularly top-tier US graduate and undergraduate programmes.

Available TOEFL formats

  • TOEFL iBT (Test Centre) — taken at an authorised ETS test centre on a computer with secure proctoring.
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition — the same test, taken at home with live human proctoring via ProctorU. Accepted by all institutions that accept TOEFL iBT.
  • TOEFL iBT Paper Edition — a split-format option in select regions where reading and listening are on paper, speaking and writing are completed at home.
  • TOEFL Essentials — a shorter, lower-cost general English test (not all schools accept it; always check the programme).

Four sections, one academic English score

Reading — ~35 min

2 academic passages, around 20 questions total. Multiple-choice and a final summary or table-completion task. Tests inference, vocabulary in context, and rhetorical purpose.

Listening — ~36 min

2 conversations and 3 lectures with note-taking allowed throughout. 28 questions covering main idea, attitude, function, and connecting information.

Speaking — ~16 min

4 tasks recorded into a microphone — 1 Independent ("state your opinion") and 3 Integrated (combine reading, listening, and speaking). Each response is 45–60 seconds long.

Writing — ~29 min

Two tasks: an Integrated essay (read + listen + write a 150–225 word summary) and Writing for an Academic Discussion (a 100+ word reply contributing to an online classroom thread).

How TOEFL iBT is scored

Each of the four sections is scored 0–30, giving a total out of 120. Reading and Listening are computer-scored; Speaking and Writing are evaluated by a combination of certified human raters and AI scoring. ETS publishes proficiency descriptors (Below Basic, Basic, Low/High Intermediate, Advanced) for each section to help universities interpret your level.

MyBest Scores

ETS automatically reports your highest section scores from the last 2 years across all your valid TOEFL tests, in addition to your most recent test scores. Many schools accept MyBest Scores — confirm with each programme before relying on it.

Typical score requirements

  • Top US universities (Ivy League, top-20) — 100–110+ with no section below 25.
  • Most US graduate programmes — 90–100 overall, with minimum 20–22 per section.
  • US undergraduate admissions — typically 80–100 depending on the college.
  • Canadian universities — 86–100 overall.
  • UK and European universities accepting TOEFL — usually 88–100 overall with minimum section scores set by the course.

FAQs

Common TOEFL questions

How often can I retake TOEFL?

You can retake it as often as you like, but you must wait at least 3 days between attempts. Your most recent score and your MyBest Scores both appear on the score report.

Is the Home Edition accepted everywhere?

TOEFL iBT Home Edition is treated as identical to the test centre version by virtually all institutions that accept TOEFL. Always double-check programme requirements, especially for licensing bodies.

How long are TOEFL scores valid?

Two years from the test date. Universities will not accept reports older than that, even if your application is in progress.

Can I send scores to universities later?

Yes. ETS sends 4 free score reports to designated institutions per test. Additional reports can be ordered any time during the 2-year validity window.
