Book a Free ConsultationThe Duolingo English Test (DET) is a computer-adaptive English proficiency test taken entirely online, on demand, from your own laptop or desktop. It is owned and delivered by Duolingo and uses a combination of AI scoring and human proctor review to certify your results — typically within 2 days of submission.
The DET is widely accepted for university admissions, but its acceptance for immigration and visa purposes is limited. Most national immigration authorities (UK Home Office, IRCC for Canadian PR, Australian Home Affairs) continue to require IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, CELPIA, or CAEL for visa evidence. Confirm with your specific university and visa pathway before booking.
Undergraduate and graduate applicants — particularly to US, UK, Canadian, and Irish universities — who want a fast, affordable English proficiency credential alongside or instead of IELTS/TOEFL.
Photo ID check, video and audio test, environment scan via webcam. You agree to the test rules: no looking away, no other people in the room, no notes or devices nearby.
A mix of 16+ short task types that adapt to your performance: Read & Complete, Read Aloud, Listen & Type, Read & Select, Listen & Select, Speaking Sample, Writing Sample, Interactive Listening, and more.
You pick from prompts and respond with an open-ended Speaking video (1–3 min) and a Writing Sample (3–5 min). These are unscored officially but sent to admissions teams as samples of your unaided English.
Each task is individually timed and you cannot return to earlier questions. Once submitted, your recording is reviewed by human proctors; any rule violation can invalidate the certificate.
Your overall score is 10–160 in 5-point increments. Alongside the overall score, you receive four subscores — Literacy (reading + writing), Comprehension (reading + listening), Conversation (speaking + listening), and Production (writing + speaking) — that universities use to assess sub-skill balance.
Most US, UK, Canadian, and Irish universities accept the DET, but minimum scores vary by programme. Always confirm with each programme's admissions page before booking — we maintain an up-to-date reference list.
Up to 2 certified results within any 30-day period. There is no lifetime cap. Each test session is a separate purchase.
Generally no — UK, Canadian, Australian, and most other visa authorities still require IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or a CELPIP/CAEL equivalent. The DET is primarily an admissions test.
The test is invalidated and the fee is not refunded. The most common reasons are looking off-screen, environmental noise, and another person being visible. Practising the rules during mock attempts is essential.
Test fees, formats, and accepting institutions are updated by the official conducting bodies. We've drawn the figures on this page from these official sources — always confirm the current details before booking your test.
