Which test do I need?

Pick the right exam for your goal

Most students need one English-proficiency test (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo) and — depending on the programme — one academic aptitude test (SAT for undergraduate, GRE or GMAT for graduate).

English proficiency — for non-native speakers

IELTS and TOEFL iBT are accepted almost universally. PTE Academic is the fastest, with results in 2 days and strong acceptance in Australia, the UK, and the EU. Duolingo English Test is the most affordable and quickest at-home option for university admissions (limited visa acceptance).

Undergraduate admissions

The Digital SAT is required or strongly recommended by most US colleges, and accepted by a growing number of universities in Canada, the UK, Australia, India, and the Middle East. Many US schools also accept the ACT as an equivalent.

Master's & PhD (general)

The GRE General Test is the most widely accepted graduate-admissions test for STEM, social sciences, humanities, and many business and law programmes. It runs under 2 hours and is valid for 5 years.

MBA & business master's

The GMAT Focus Edition is the dedicated business-school test, with Quantitative, Verbal, and Data Insights sections. Most schools accept the GRE as an alternative — take the test where you'll score higher.

Preparation roadmap

How most students plan their test timeline

1. Diagnose (Week 0)

Take a free diagnostic mock in the test you're targeting so you know your starting band or score and where the biggest gaps are.

2. Build (Weeks 1–6)

Concept-by-concept coaching combined with daily targeted practice. Vocabulary, grammar, quantitative concepts, and section strategy.

3. Practice (Weeks 6–10)

Full-length, timed mocks every week with structured review of every wrong answer. We track sectional trends and lock in test-day pacing.

4. Peak & test (Weeks 10–12)

Light review, sleep schedule alignment, and one final practice run 2–3 days before the test. Book the test only when 3 consecutive mocks hit target.

FAQs

Common test-prep questions

How long should I prepare?

Most students need 4–12 weeks for English-proficiency tests and 8–20 weeks for SAT, GRE, or GMAT. The right plan depends on your diagnostic score and how far it is from your target.

When should I book the test?

Only after 3 consecutive full-length mocks score at or above your target band. Booking earlier almost always means a retake — both more expensive and more stressful.

Do I need more than one test?

Often yes. Master's applicants typically take both a GRE/GMAT and an IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/DET. Undergraduate applicants take the SAT plus an English test if they are non-native speakers and their school requires it.

What if my first attempt isn't enough?

Every test on this page allows retakes within set rules. We'll diagnose what slipped, focus on the weak section, and target the next sitting — including IELTS One Skill Retake, GMAT cancellation, GRE ScoreSelect, and SAT Score Choice.
